Spanish Fort and Senior Bowl alum Jalen Wayne was signed to the Buffalo Bills as an undrafted free agent over the weekend following the 88th annual NFL Draft.

The former South Alabama receiver was one of six reported pickups made by Buffalo as of the beginning of the week with five on offense and one on defense.

He’ll be joined in the wide receiver room by Tyrell Shavers from San Diego State as well as two linemen and a running back offensively. Also signed by the Bills was defensive lineman DJ Dale from Alabama.

Wayne capped his college football career at the Senior Bowl where he led his team with 50 receiving yards in one last game at Mobile’s Hancock Whitney Stadium where the South Alabama Jaguars play their home contests.

A 2017 graduate of Spanish Fort High School, Wayne helped the Toro football team to the quarterfinals of the Class 6A state playoffs in the fall. In the winter, he and the Spanish Fort basketball team went to the state semifinals of their bracket.

As a high school senior, Wayne recorded 28 catches for 469 receiving yards and three touchdowns to complement 279 rushing yards. For his South Alabama career, Wayne collected 1,978 receiving yards on 152 receptions with 14 touchdowns and a long of 64 yards in 61 games played.

Wayne has professional connections in his family tree where 14-year NFL veteran Reggie Wayne is technically his second cousin although the former sees the latter as more of an uncle. Reggie Wayne was also a Senior Bowl standout and was inducted into the Senior Bowl’s Hall of Fame in 2021.
