Cadets soak in the fun at water-themed field day

In August, AFJROTC unit AL-935 of Daphne High School hosted a field day for their cadets.

This event was planned by cadets C/MSgt. Cade Johnson and C/MSgt. Annamae Gray, and the execution was assisted by SASI Lt. Col. Doug Goodlin and ASI CMSgt. Donald S. Terrance, as well as the parents of some cadets who volunteered their time to help the cause. For this fall's field day, we decided to go with a water-themed field day because of the recent surge of hot weather, which many cadets enjoyed.

This was the first event of our first-year cadets, and those who attended had a water-filled blast. To start the day off, cadets played a fun name game to get to know each other where they would throw water balloons at each other and scream out their names. Once the cadets dispersed, activities such as slip-n-slide kickball, slip-n-slide tug of war, corn hole, flag football and soccer were played. The main event for this fall field day was capture the flag, where upperclassmen went against the freshman in a cross-campus capture the flag match. The upperclassmen decided to try to get clever by launching a three-pronged plan of attack, which did not work; instead, the second time, three cadets rode incognito across the campus to the freshmen's territory. This still did not work, but it was fun. The upperclassmen's third attempt was sneaky, in which they tricked the freshmen by saying it was lunch time and charged and captured their flag and bathed in their victory.

Lunch was prepared by CMSgt. Donald S. Terrance, who grilled burgers and hotdogs for all of the cadets. Once all of the cadets ate, everything was cleaned up from this eventful and fun day, then cadets were dismissed. Field day is an important day to AFJROTC, as it helps all of the new cadets get acquainted with the upperclassmen through fun and relationship building activities. It helps the new cadets feel more comfortable and at home with the AL-935 unit.

The AL-935 unit features 116 cadets from both Daphne and Spanish Fort high schools. This award-winning program has been running at Daphne High School since 1993. This year marks the 14th year of teaching by the senior instructor, Lt. Col. (Ret.) Goodlin and the fourth year of teaching by the aerospace science instructor, CMSgt. (Ret.) Terrance. The corps, made up of ninth- through 12th-graders, is led this semester by Daphne senior cadet Lt. Col. Sevyn Smith.
