Posted

The Podcast Task Force from Coastal Alabama Community College recently attended the Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America (CADCA) National Leadership Forum in National Harbor, Maryland. Comprised of students passionate about addressing mental health issues and their intersection with substance abuse, suicide, and relationships, the task force aims to produce a podcast that educates and empowers their college community.

During the CADCA Leadership Forum, the task force explored current trends in substance abuse, including the alarming rise of opioids, THC, marijuana and vaping among youth and young adults. Equipped with this information, the students gained a deeper understanding of the multifaceted challenges surrounding substance abuse and its impact on individuals and communities.

A highlight of the Podcast Task Force's experience was Capitol Hill Day, where the students met with Congressman Jerry Carl and Senator Katie Britt's Legislative Assistant Maggie McPherson. In these meetings, the task force advocated for increased support for substance abuse prevention efforts, emphasizing the importance of youth voices in shaping policy and driving positive change.

Returning home to Coastal Alabama, the Podcast Task Force carries with them a renewed sense of purpose and determination. Inspired by the knowledge gained and connections forged at the CADCA Leadership Forum, they are more committed than ever to amplifying their voices and fostering dialogue around mental health, substance abuse, and pathways to healing and resilience. The task force acknowledges the support of sponsors Baldwin County Community Alliance and the Fairhope Police Department.
