BAY MINETTE — The Sun Chiefs improved their early season mark to 4-2 with a 3-0 win in their first home-court match Tuesday. Coastal Alabama - Bay Minette swept the Southern Union Lions in three straight sets in their 2018 opener at Jack Robertson Arena 25-18, 25-9, 25-23.

"I like the way we jumped out on top," said Sun Chiefs head coach Ritchie Dulaney. "I'm excited about how we are playing right now with five freshmen on the court. Of course, we are so young, but they are taking shape. Lot's of potential. I think they sense it. Just takes more experience, maturity in handling the rough spots. Overall, they are coming along. My defense is fantabulous. Can't say enough about how well they are playing.”

Four players combined for 24 kills in the match to lead the attack. Natalie Omtvedt, Karrington Perkins, Brianna Turner and Taylor Wright each had six while Dazhane Gasery added four. Amanda Kay Shubert furnished 16 assists and Kiersten Nezat had 10. Defensive specialist Renea Bertheaud came up with nine digs, Omtvedt had seven and Nezat converted six.

Through six matches CACC-South is averaging 10.36 kills. 9.29 assists and 9.14 digs per set. The Lady Bison’s attack was led by Ty Davis with 11 kills

Dulaney said the Chiefs will get their biggest test of the season Friday night when they host defending conference champ Wallace State Hanceville.

"We will get a test for sure. They always have great players, but every year is different with two-year programs, so we'll see."

The Wallace State – Hanceville Lions have five returning players, but also have several freshmen on their roster, including former Foley Lion Kaden Edenfield. That match is set to start at 5 p.m. at Robertson Arena on the CACC-Bay Minette campus.
