Trey Sheils, a state champion swimmer from Daphne competing collegiately for the Alabama Crimson Tide, was recognized by the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) alongside 23 of his teammates as Scholar All-Americans.

The former Trojan was a second-team selection after he registered a GPA over 3.5 and met the “B” time standard for the national championship meet.

He helped the Crimson Tide men’s squad earn a Scholar All-America Team designation with a total GPA of 3.25. Alabama’s women’s program also garnered the honor with a team GPA of 3.66.

Altogether, 16 of the Crimson Tide’s representatives came from the women’s team between nine first-team selections and seven second-team honorees. Alabama’s men’s team had four athletes each on the first and second teams.

The 2023-24 swimming and diving season for the Crimson Tide is scheduled to get started at home on Sept. 29 against the Delta State Statesmen.

Before Sheils jumped in the pool for Alabama, he was twice named All-American by the National Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association (NISCA) as a member of the Daphne Trojans.

As a sophomore, Sheils won the Alabama High School Athletic Association’s state title in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 57.08 seconds which set a state record. The following year he broke his own record with a time of 55.39 seconds as a junior before he won a third straight state title as a senior with a 55.90.

Similarly in the 200-yard individual medley, Sheils claimed the state title as a junior with a time of 1:51.13 which marked a new state record. As a senior, he improved on the record with a 1:50.52 to collect a fifth overall state title.

Sheils’ 100-yard breaststroke time of 55.39 seconds from 2018 still stands as a state record in the AHSAA for Classes 1A-7A. On the Class 6A-7A stage, Sheils still holds the state record in the 100-yard breaststroke (54.95) as well as the 200-yard IM (1:50.14) from his times at the 2019 state championship preliminaries.
