Fairhope crowns King 2024 Fairhoper of the Year

Catherine King has been named the 2024 Fairhoper of the Year in recognition of her contributions to the City of Fairhope.

According to a news release, King's dedicated service to the city spans years of volunteering with the Fairhope Museum of History and the Fairhope Single Tax Corporation (FSTC).

Following her retirement from the University of South Alabama, King made it a priority to engage in community organizations and pursue opportunities for personal enrichment. Her journey into volunteerism began in 2008 when she joined the Fairhope Museum of History, driven by her passion for history and the desire to contribute to her hometown.

"What else does a history major do with extra time if there is a fabulous museum about your hometown two miles from your house?" King remarked in the release.

Since its opening 16 years ago, King has dedicated her time weekly to the museum, immersing herself in Fairhope's rich history and sharing her knowledge with visitors.

King attributes much of her volunteer journey to the guidance and support of founding Museum Director (now retired) and Fairhope historian Donnie Barrett, who shared his expertise and passion for Fairhope's unique heritage.

"Every time I volunteer, there is always something new and interesting to learn — plus the museum is a delightful place to talk with visitors about Fairhope and keep in touch with fellow docents and the great museum staff."

In addition to her involvement with the museum, King has been an active member of the Fairhope Single Tax Corporation since 2003, serving on the FSTC Archives Committee. This committee oversees an online repository containing historical documents, photographs and videos related to Fairhope's history, all with the aim of preserving and sharing these resources with the public.

Upon receiving the Volunteer of the Year accolade, King expressed appreciation for the honor and highlighted her pride in being part of Fairhope's dedicated volunteer corps. Looking ahead, she affirmed her commitment to furthering her volunteer work.

"I look forward to continuing volunteer work on the FSTC Archives and at the Fairhope Museum," she said, "always learning more about the unique history of Fairhope."
