Gulf Shores Lions Club Peace Poster Winners announced

Posted

The Gulf Shores Lions Club sponsored art students from Elberta Middle School, Gulf Shores Middle School and St. Benedict’s Catholic School to participate in this year's Lions Club International Peace Poster competition. Posters were entered by art teachers at each school and judged by board members of the Gulf Shores Lions Club.

This year’s theme was "Peace through Service" and judging was based on originality and artistic merit. The Gulf Shores Lions Club commends the talent and applauds the efforts of these young people for their excellent expression of what this year’s theme means to them. Congratulations and a sincere Thank you to all who took part in this wonderful and inspiring event.

Gulf Shores Middle School

Peace Poster Chair Lion Regina Coaker and artist and owner of Liquid Sunshine Gallery, Steph Barnett judged the 95 poster contest participants taught by their art teacher Mrs. Megan Michealson.

“It was very touching to walk the halls and see the beautiful displayed pieces of art these very bright and gifted students created. It was obvious they each have strong ideas of what peace means to them. How they were able to portray it to others through art was quite amazing,’’ Coaker said.

After much deliberation, the first place cash award went to 8th grader Marlie McCartney. And her creation was chosen to be submitted to compete against other area talent at the district level. The second place cash award went to 8th grader Amanda Larenas. Due to the amazing talent at Gulf Shores Middle School it was very tough to reach this decision. Out of the 95 participants, 13 Honorable Mentions were also presented to Tereza Mojs, Ella Gilbert, Kayleigh Jacks, Serenity Stainbrook, Phoenix Wallace, Lydia Marshall, Reaghan Myers, Dujon Edwards, Ethan Carias, Anayia McCutchen, Kristian Barmettler, Amberly Arthur, Kylee McElveen.

Elberta Middle School

At Elberta Middle School the first place cash award went to 8th grader Emma Williams, second place cash award went to 8th grader Hartley Gunderson and Honorable Mention awards were presented to Charlotte Hoang and Anna Berec. A certificate and check was presented to art teacher Linda Hill and Principal Katy White for participating.

St. Benedict’s Middle School

Four students were selected to receive awards from among the St Benedict’s Catholic School 7th and 8th grade students participating in this year's competition. The first place cash prize winner is 8th grader, Madi Taylor. Second place cash prize was awarded to 8th grader, Kayden Davis.
