Loxley postpones registration for summer camp

LOXLEY, Alabama — Registration for the Town of Loxley’s 16th Summer Youth Program has been postponed because of uncertainties due to the Coronavirus, said the town’s director of activities Tina Harris.

Registration for the camp was set to start at the beginning of April, Harris said. The five-week program runs the day after Memorial Day, May 26, through June 26.

Right now, Harris said, the state of Alabama is under a stay-at-home order through April 30. If the order is extended into May, that could delay the start of the program.

“We just decided to wait and see what happens,” she said. “We could postpone the camp to June and July, but if we wait much longer than that, we will be getting into the start of the school year, so I’m not sure right now what we’re going to do.”

Started in limited capacity in 2004 by then activities director Joey Knight, the camp is open to boys and girls ages 5 to 12. After drawing as many as 100 campers in its early years, the camp was limited to 50.

Registration for the camp is $150, which includes all art and craft supplies, special events, daily snacks and teachers, among other things. The camp provides lunch at a cost of $2 per meal and a light breakfast for $1 per meal.

In the past, camps have included programs through the Auburn Extension, Loxley Fire Department, Police Department and Library, among others.

The camp has also offered water days with slip and slides and other water activities every other week with an extended splash day offered the day before the last day of the camp.

Keep checking with the town of Loxley’s Facebook page for updates, Harris said. Registration forms will be available at townofloxley.com.
