Making a splash: Legg's work flows across Baldwin County with latest 'Fairhope's Familiars' mural at Hampton Inn

FAIRHOPE — Local artist Hannah Legg is diving into her own sea of creativity and bringing the wall beside the Fairhope Hampton Inn parking garage to life.

After Legg created eight designs around the city, Fairhope City Council asked the artist to combine all the ideas into one. The mural, titled "Fairhope's Familiars," showcases native animals of the Mobile Bay area, including a crab, heron and fish, using colors like purple, turquoise, green, blue and yellow to capture passersby's attention.

Legg emphasized the mural's connection to the Hampton Inn's renovation on Section Street.

"Part of the whole renovation that they are doing down here is to, first of all, draw people's attention to the fact that we have a parking garage back here. Parking downtown is hard already, so I am like, anything to draw people in here to this," she said.

Additionally, the mural pays homage to local artist Bruce Larson's seahorse sculptures that are also featured in Fairhope.

"When we were first discussing ideas, the seahorse was definitely something we wanted to bring from one end of the alley to the other," she said.

Legg added that instead of doing a mural with just a seahorse, she wanted to make sure to include local animals as well.

Rather than standing with two feet on the ground, Legg works on "Fairhope's Familiars" in a lift so she can reach the tall, turquoise wall.

"This thing (the lift) has been phenomenally helpful," she said.

Despite being a couple feet above the ground and close to the wall, Legg explained that she can get a better view of the painting.

"The higher I am, the easier it is to take a step back," she said.

Legg has found her passion in art and gives credit to the people for giving her the joy in painting these murals.

"I always meet really nice people when I am doing murals," she said. "It always feeds into the success of the final project because everybody is a part of it; it's everybody's artwork."
