NFL kicker, family planning new home in Orange Beach

ORANGE BEACH, AL — The Bryant family is hoping to kick it around in Orange Beach while they wait for their new home to be built on Canal Road in the area of Bear Point.

“I talked with the family and I just think this is a unique situation,” Mayor Tony Kennon said. “Their property is 1,000 feet deep and 200 feet wide. There are seven children and they really can’t find a place to rent.”

It’s unique in other ways as well. The Bryant family is the family of Matt Bryant, placekicker for the Atlanta Falcons football team.

Their previous residence, a nearly 8,000 square-foot home on Ono Island named by the Bryants as “Kicking Back,” was recently sold. It was on the market for $3.35 million and sold in October for $2.8 million, according to Kathy Trice of Kaiser Sotheby’s International Realty.

Melissa Bryant asked the Orange Beach City Council for a temporary housing request to put on the property while the new home is being built. The Bryants want to place a five-bedroom, doublewide trailer on their wooded lot during construction.

“Nobody will see it,” Kennon said. “They want to have their kids in our schools after January. It’s one of those things where we have the ability to make that decision and it’s not prohibitive.”

According to city zoning laws, the council can allow temporary housing for six months. An appeal can be made after that time for another 18 months.

“According to Mrs. Bryant that’s sufficient time,” Community Development Director Kit Alexander said.

The council unanimously OK’d the temporary residence for the Bryants.

“We don’t have this type of request that often where you’ve got seven kids involved,” Kennon said. “It’s a worthy request.”

The new home, described as “large” by Kennon, will be called “Kicking Back 2.” The home on Ono Island was called “Kicking Back” and had eight bedrooms, six and a half baths, outdoor pool that had a swim-up bar and an outdoor kitchen overlooking Ole River.

Matt Bryant, 41, is a graduate of Baylor and has played for five teams in the NFL, the last eight seasons with the Falcons. He is the all-time leader in field goals for the team. In October he became the second Falcon to score more than 700 points and needs to score 107 more to surpass the team record of 806 held by kicker Morten Andersen.
