ROBERTSDALE, Alabama — If you follow athletics in the state of Alabama, you probably know that this weekend is state championship weekend for high school football teams in the Alabama High School Athletic Association.

But for many high school athletes in the state of Alabama, it’s also a chance to compete in various riding and roping events. Saturday and Sunday, the Alabama High School Rodeo Association will bring cowboys and cowgirls from across the state to compete at the Baldwin County Fairgrounds Arena in Robertsdale.

The two-day, two-go event is sanctioned by the Alabama High School Rodeo Association and co-sponsored by Bo Campbell Rodeo Productions.

At its meeting on Nov. 21, the city of Robertsdale agreed to sponsor the barrel racing competition, plus a banner sponsorship for the rodeo at a cost of $650.

Ashley Clukey, a student at Robertsdale High School and competitor in barrel racing, pole racing and breakaway roping, addressed the council during the morning meeting.

First-go competition begins at 2 p.m. on Saturday, with second-go set to begin at 9:30 a.m., following cowboy church at 8 a.m. Admission is $8 for adults, $5 for students. Admission is free for children under 5.

According to its website, ahsra.org, the Alabama High School Rodeo Association is a member of the National High School Rodeo Association headquartered in Denver. Membership is limited to students 19 years old or younger and enrolled in the ninth through 12th grades.

More than 100 competitors from throughout the state, along with competitors from Georgia and Florida, participate in high school rodeo competitions throughout the state.

The high school rodeo season begins in September and includes more than 15 events, culminating with the AHSRA State Finals Rodeo in June. Rodeo events include cutting, bareback and saddle bronc riding, breakaway calf roping, pole bending, steer wrestling, goat tying, team roping, barrel racing and bull riding.

Contestants compete for points throughout the season with the top four point earners in each event qualifying to represent Alabama at the National High School Finals Rodeo.

Students can join anytime throughout the season. There is no deadline for membership. Competitors at the high school level go on to compete in colleges throughout the country.

Robertsdale’s own Kyle Irwin, son of Robertsdale Council member Ruthie Campbell, was among those to compete and earned scholarships at Western Oklahoma College and Northwestern Oklahoma State University before going on to compete in the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas the past two years.

• Reappointed Teresa Bryant and Kenny King to the Library Board.

• Allowed Robertsdale Chief of Police Brad Kendrick to purchase a new vehicle for the police department on the state bid.

• Allowed the Robertsdale Volunteer Fire Department to amend its bylaws to clear up some issues with wording in the document.

• Approved a request from the Robertsdale High School band boosters to promote the Baldwin County honor band performance at the ABC Dunkin Donuts Thanksgiving Day Parade in Philadelphia. Select band members from Robertsdale, Fairhope, Daphne and Baldwin County high schools participated in the event.

• Voted to allow the Robertsdale High School basketball team to use the digital billboard to promote home games when feasible.
