The award-winning Stapleton Bluegrass Festival is gearing up for this year’s festival Oct. 28.
The festival was a staple of the fall calendar in the early 1980s after the first bluegrass gathering was held rather informally to raise money for a new town fire station. That little gathering led to a community tradition for 20 years.
After a brief hiatus, the festival was revived by the staff, parents and students at Stapleton School to raise money for the school. Over the years the funds raised by the festival have made improvements at Stapleton School such as an electronic sign, a flagpole, picnic tables, basketball goals and more.
The annual festival is a full day of music, food and activities that pull bluegrass fans and performers from all over the region.
The festival starts strumming Saturday, Oct. 28, at 10:30 a.m., and the fun wraps up at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 5 – 12.
Remember to bring blankets or lawn chairs as no seating is provided. No coolers, alcohol or outside food or drinks allowed. Food trucks and vendors will be on-site.

This lineup for the 2023 Stapleton Bluegrass Festival includes:
Amanda Cook - Originally from Jay, Florida, Cook acquired a love of bluegrass from her father who played the banjo throughout her childhood. In 2007, Amanda formed the bluegrass group High Cotton with her father and received her first taste of performing, fueling a fire to continue on a professional level.
The Chestangs – The Chestangs, from McIntosh, Alabama, have been playing bluegrass gospel music since 1996. They have traveled all over the southeast region and opened for nationally known acts that include The Larry Stephenson Band and The Little Roy and Lizzy Show.
Fat Man Squeeze – An eclectic bluegrass band from lower Alabama, Fat Man Squeeze fuses picking bluegrass with rock, rock-a-billy, country and blues.
Blue Mullet – Blue Mullet is a Fairhope-based bluegrass band, steeped in traditional, contemporary and Gospel bluegrass.
The Unknown Bluegrass Band – The Unknown Bluegrass Band is a regional favorite and staple of the festival.
The Tennessee Bluegrass Band – The five-person group was formed from top-notch musicians who each had gained expertise through performing with some of the industry’s leading bands. They have a passion for making music that combines the ideas of the past with modern-day creativity.
