First day of school for Orange Beach full of excitement for the future

Orange Beach made history Aug. 14 when the inaugural classes at Orange Beach Middle and High schools walked through the doors for the first day of school.

High School Principal Dr. Erika McCoy and Middle School principal Dr. Robbie Smith said they have been anticipating this day for months.

Students and parents were given a good idea of the academic and attendance expectations for the year at the meet and greet on Aug.5. McCoy joked that she doesn’t mind hopping in a boat to find students skipping school on Robinson Island.

Orange Beach Elementary also experienced some changes on the first day of the new school year. This year the elementary school will be sharing its car line and cafeteria with the middle school. The changes are temporary, and the elementary students will return to being the only children on campus next fall when the new middle and high school are complete.

School staff and Orange Beach police have worked together to create a traffic flow that will keep things moving this year with the increase in student population. Administrators have asked parents to be patient as they work out the kinks over the first few weeks.

“We are going to have a great year. Go Mako’s!” Smith said.
